Old Skool DJ in Cardiff, South Wales, (UK) Cardiff is a great place to go clubbing, but still no old skool in the clubs, what do you do? er, goto once a month events, go to a cheesy club on the pull, try to get into some cheap and nasty 4/4 beat stuff, or go on the decks yourself and make the most slamming breakbeat old skool mixes you have ever heard. YEAH! I mix the tunes of '88 - '94 on my decks, also using a sampler mixer, roland mc303, and some bad ass scratching thrown into the mix, cos I was around when Run DMC were the hip hop kings, who are they again? that house band? I'll leave you to the review of my trade, the old skool... |

In the UK during 1986, the only music the street youths had to listen to was either Hip Hop or Acid House. If you was around then, you will remember that it was two distinctly different styles of music, and if you was into hip hop then you probably didn't want to know anything else. In 1988 the acid house scene outgrew itself and a new wave of records was emerging to replace acid house, they called it hardcore house. That is the old skool. 1988 - 1992. Old skool (or house, as some people called it, and not to be confused with the 'house' of today), consisted of speeded up hip hop breaks and James Brown drum samples to give the drums extra energy. The hip hop followers were then able to crossover from hip hop into hardcore, taking their hip hop culture and NY influences with them. The rave scene was born right there in the UK, in warehouses, disused buildings and many fields up and down the country played host to the biggest all night parties the kids had ever seen. The DJ's were having to travel hundreds of miles to get to some events, as news spread of their talents, the ones with the biggest reputations became well known (and in demand). Before long, every big rave in the UK always had the same DJ's listed on the flyers for the events, as those first few DJ's were able to attract their own followers, even if they wasn't all that technically gifted at first. Promotors started charging well over £10 per ticket, people got paid, DJ's became respected and admired. Actually these same DJ's were treated like Gods, and promoters didn't want to know any other talented DJ's that 'missed the boat', as they already had their DJ's, and those guys were the ones that got the punter to part with his money. To DJ Steady Jay it was clear that it is not what you know that counts, but in fact who you know, and living in South Wales was no help to the situation, as everything revolved around London. Frustrated at not getting noticed, he went underground, mixing up tunes at private parties and getting people to shake their heads in disbelief that he wasn't yet famous. He's getting a recording studio soon so that he can make his mark that way, turntablism isn't paying the bills. The promoters know talent when they hear it, but they prefer the big names, he's trying to get noticed now with this world wide message. Those old skool DJ's who was into that music back in the days either made it big or moved onto something else (such as garage or happy hardcore etc). This old skool DJ, Steady Jay, stuck to his roots and carried on mixing his breaks, beats and scratches, with a passion. Steady Jay has a unique arsenal of mixing skills, stemming from the hip hop days of cutting and scratching, he knows all the tricks plus ones he claims to have made up himself. Turntablism has become an artform all on its own, combine that with the old skool hardcore sound and you have a rare high quality mix that stands out from the crowd.
